Hi Everyone -
Does anyone know if there's a way to make a little money by knitting? I just lost my job. Thanks |

Sorry to hear that, Kag953.
There are lots of ways to make money from knitting, but none are fast or quickly lucrative. This kind of career move would probably be better done gradually or as a supplement, rather than as a sole source of income. Here are a few ideas: You can knit items to display at craft sales, you can knit on commission, you can test-knit for designers, you can submit patterns/articles to knitting magazines that pay their contributors, you can copy-edit for a publisher . . . . All these take some networking and reputation-building, finding the opportunities that ARE out there and matching them to your abilities/strengths/limitations. |

Thanks much. Never heard of copy-editing for a publisher. How do you find work like that?

I don't know from personal experience, but I suppose you would contact a publisher and ask them. I expect it would help if you knew who in the company handles the craft titles and if you have related (secretarial? English teacher? newspaper editorial?) experience.

There was a thread here a couple of (or 3, or 4...) years ago about what to charge for your knitting. It was a combination of a per yard charge with extra for a complex design PLUS the cost of the yarn. I couldn't find it in a search, but I hope someone who quoted a cost will come back and tell us again.
You could also teach others how to knit. When I was teaching the shop got $10 per person for a 2 hour class and I got $25. There was never more than 10 people per teacher, and they were of mixed experience. Good luck - I hope you find a new job soon! Louise - If at first you don't succeed... frog it and start again! |

That may have been my post. I needed info on valuation to insure a prayer shawl I was mailing.
In my area, the convention is: Cost of materials X 2 OR Cost of materials + $0.12-$0.15 (adjusted since I originally asked) per yard used for labor. The higher end of the scale takes into consideration original design and/or complex work. Using those formulae, my shawl was worth (at the time either) ~$10.00 0r $50.00. Guess which I chose? Hope this helps. Monica If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well. |
