Here in Unalakleet on the edge of the Bering Sea it is a warm -42F today! The last 6 days it has been dropping form the -20s which is normal for months here. Down to the -30s for a few days and now this a.m. it is a -42 F.

Perfect weather to continue my work on my ski sweater. I did organize my stash and found enough yarn for two more sweaters---what a score! See organizing my stash just saved me money! You have to love that!

I hope the rest of you are warm, healthy, and knitting away!

Gee and here I was complaining about 23 degrees and it felt like 9.

It may be good knitting weather, but it triggers my asthma.

You can tell that it is knitting weather when:
You inhale outside and your nose hairs freeze.
The cat does his best to climb inside your sweater with you.
The heavy duty sweaters come out, along with the felted slippers and the flannel lined jeans.
The crock pot has soup or stew in it constantly, and the cat roosts next to it when there is no lap with sweater to hide in glaring morosely at the snow.

As I sit here this a.m. on Monday the temperature is rising it went from -35.5 to -33.5 so I hope this cold snap is breaking and we will be back in our normal range of weather. 0 to -20F funny how warm that seems now!

Nancy,
I don't think I would do well in Alaska-what do you heat your homes with? It's 30 here today which is good.

We use oil to heat the homes. Since we teach out here we do pay rent but not utilities. heating fuel is $7.00 a gallon as they can only bring it in in the summer and so until it runs out we all pay $7.00 for fuel or heating oil.

It is still -20 F but that is 22 degrees warmer. One just knits more!

Wow!! And I thought I was paying a lot for my LP to heat with. I think I contracted for around $2.25 a gallon this fall and they just put more in - there goes my yarn money for a while. I've always been intrigued with living in Alaska, but doubt I could take the cold for that long.

It has been very cold now for just over a week. Last night we went to bed it was -35 F this a.m. it is -26 F.

I knit a lot and read. I also coach the cross-country ski team and it is to cold for the kids to ski, but we hope to get other this afternoon. One can only stay inside for so long!

We paid about $4.00 a gallon for kerosene last fall. We have a small place, so we usually get our whole winter's worth at once. But this year we did it differently. We only bought 275 gallons instead of the usual 350 and we still paid more this time then we did the year before. Then the bottom fell out of the oil market and we can buy it for about $2.89 or so. So we go to our local gas station and get 10 gallons every three to four weeks. We'll keep doing that over the summer to take the edge off the hit to the pocket book. We might not save a lot overall, but the hit will be spread out. I wish it was sunny enough here to make solar panels practical!
And now the weatherman is predicting from 4-10 inches over the next 24 hours here. Good thing it's the weekend. Knitting weather for sure!
