I keep hearing about knitting videos online that are tutorials, like at knitty.com or on YouTube.
What I was wondering was, is it possible to burn them to a DVD? Not that I would want to then sell them or anything, but I have pokey dial-up and it stinks to take an hour or more just to download and view a 5 minute video. I was thinking this might be possible only because most of these are free-for-the-viewing online. So if I could burn something and use it for future reference it would be nice.
I know that there is always the concern regarding piracy of copywrites and of course anyone could 'say' they don't intend to resell whatever they burn.
So what do you all think or know about this?

I think you have to download it to burn it--and once it's been loaded, you can just watch it on your computer. So I guess I don't see the benefit.

Hi,

I think you can download them as well.

Once you have them downloaded then they would be on your machine and if you have enough memory you would be able to watch them when ever you like. You can check with youtube for their restrictions or contact the person who made them and ask them.

I would ask as it is best to be safe than sorry.

The reason I wanted to burn anything to a DVD is because I lost everything once before when the hard-drive on my last computer went bad. If I'm going to take the time to download something, I want and intend to KEEP it!
I watched a video that was posted on YouTube, but the link to it was on Ravelry, and the video was of the journey from starting level 1 all the way through level 3. It took almost 2 hours to download it so I could watch. And the worst of that was that I started to download it before, but had to stop and when I came back to it later, I had to start all over again. There was no "memory" of it in my computer to just pick up where I left off. Argghhh!
So if it is possible to download and save to DVD anything of a tutorial nature, I would like to.

BTW, as far as short-cuts to downloading, my teen-genius web guru tells me that videos are to large to send as e-mail attachments.

Also, YouTube has restrictions on downloading to copy, because of liscensing requirements. (IIRC, it's totally forbidden.)

Hi,

I would suggest contacting the person who made the video.

1. See if they would make you copy if you send them the dvd.

2. There just was a university student who was found guilt of music copying/downloading and I think the fine was 4 million $$$.

3. Respect copyright contact the person who made the video by email which you can do if you sign up on youtube. They may be thrilled you want a copy always better to ask I think in this case.

I have no intention of not respecting anyones copyrights at all. As I said before, my only thought was that if a tutorial video was available for viewing for free on the web, I would have liked to download and burn to DVD a copy strictly for personal use. So I wondered if it was possible. But I'm beginning to believe it isn't, so no problem.
