I am knitting a bunch of basic dish clothes to include in my rummage sale. I'm not sure what to price each of these at. I've heard the most I can ask is $2, and I looked around on the internet and saw pricing at $2.50 to $3.00. I kind of think these prices are low for a hand knit item even though it's just a dish cloth, and these are so handy to use for dishes, dusting or as face wash clothes. Does anyone know what a fair price is for a basic dish cloth? Thank you so much!

No idea at all to be honest. I would certainly pay $3.00 for a hand knit dish cloth!
If you can figure out how much yarn was used that should help you out a bit. Nancy Knitski on Raverly |

I did a quick search and saw prices ranging from $5 to $8.

I have sold dishcloths at so many holiday craft and other sales. I always sell them for $2.50 each. Yes, it might seem like a small amount but it's like a store and their sales. You are making the money in the volume of things you sell. I would much rather sell 100 items at $2.50 each then try to sell one item at $250.00. True, it's the same amount of money but you have a better chance of getting the money in your pocket and not have a lot of people walk by your booth because the prices are too high and I have seen more then one person man a booth and not sell a single thing while my booth was always being stopped at and sales made. I always would have other small things to sell for the child who wanted to give Mom or Grandma a gift too like bookmarks or in my case plastic canvas magnets.
The only time I have higher prices is when I made the kitchen bloomers cloths($5.00) or if I put together a bar of handmade soap, 2 facecloths(in a soft cotton) and put them in a basket for spa gifts($12.50). I like to make soap too and some kits are quite easy and inexpensive. To give you an idea of the amount I've sold, each year I would have at least 3 big black garbage bags full of nothing but washcloths. Never once did I come home with more than 2 dozen cloths. That meant a pretty decent amount of cash in my pocket. I dream of climbing mountains, hunting and going fishing with the kids. Then I wake up. |

Good point! I found this topic interesting for some reason and I agree with Ladywildcat that volume is what you are after---good luck!

In Stitches,
Unfortunately, your answer is in your original question "It's only a dish cloth". See, that's all that prospective buyers see. Even thought it might take you 1/2 an hour or even an hour to knit (more if you're a slow-poke like me) a plain garter stitch cloth, people just see a plain cloth, not your time. So you are working for under minimum wage. You might be able to charge more for something with a fancier stitch that might take you about the same amount of time, but looks snazzier. So like Lady Wildcat said, it's the volume, not the price that puts money in your pocket. With that all said, I would price based on yarn price, with some time considerations included. So if you got two clothes from one ball of yarn and the yarn cost you $3.00, then I would charge $3.00 per cloth (double the cost of the yarn). This enables you to go out and get more yarn, plus keep some for profit. DianaD. (KnityGirl on Ravelry) |

Thank you everyone for your feedback! Selling in volume makes sense and making fancy clothes that could even be used as doilies is a good idea too. We had our rummage sale on for two days now and I didn't sell one dish cloth. I have them priced at $2.50, and some that I crocheted an extra border on, I priced at $3. We live in somewhat of a remote area, but we did advertise in a local newspaper, and put some signs out on more traveled roads. We haven't had a lot of traffic here. Tomorrow is our last day (Saturday) so maybe it will be a little more busy. A lot of my husband's things sold such as electronics and that kind of thing. Thank you all again for your input! I will write again is I sell some tomorrow.

Yard sales may not be the best measuring ground for your knitted items. People already have the mind set for low prices! However I think that is a wonderful price!
