I am confused with the "right" and "left" sides of a piece To determine right and left, is the right or wrong side facing me?

I am getting ready to srite up and send in lesson 2. I agree this is a great course! I have learned so much!

It's easy for swatching--it's the right and left as you're looking at the front of the swatch.

When working on a garment, I handle increases and decreases according to the same rule. But for some reason I go all to pieces when instructions for the neck of a sweater want you to start by joining the "left shoulder"! Is that "left" when I'm looking at the front? Or "left" when I'm wearing it?? (So I always work my necks in the round:-) )

In addition, YOU the knitter determines from the very start which side will be the front side of your work.
You choose either the BUMPS or the SMOOTH side of the Cast On row to be your FRONT side of your project, (UNLESS YOUR SWATCH INSTRUCTIONS STATE DIFFERENTLY) Then you can start your project once you determine which Cast On edge your prefer.

You just have to make sure that if the project is MORE than a swatch, all your Cast On rows are the same for each piece, you don't want bumps on the right side of a cardigan, and have a smooth Cast On row on the left side. Your edges would look different on the finished project.

You can have a R side or L side on both sides of your project, but that doesn't determine the FRONT or BACK of your piece. You can decide which side you like best. Then you would either start off your first row as a Purl, or a Knit row. Once that is done, then you have chosen your front or back.

At least that is how I see it. Can others jump in and add to, or correct my answer?
