I am working on the first corresp crs - TKGA Learn to Knit Program - 19 pages total. On page 19, there is a list of 8 swatches to make and mail in.
I finished swatch 1: Garter Stitch and swatch 2: Stockinette. I am trying to understand how swatch 3 Single Rib and Garter St is done. It states, k1,p1 for 2" switch to garter for 3". I get that, but what stitch am I starting with when I turn around? Am I to do garter stich for 3" and switch to k1,p1 for 2". I would guess the ribbibg is supposed to be all on one side of the swatch, but I do not want to assume. The directions are not very clear. Thank you in advance for any clarification.

Corinne,
From what I understand, you need to knit the ribbing first for 2", then knit for 3" in Garter stitch. So if you cast on 20 stitches, you would knit back and forth across those 20 stitches in the ribbing pattern. After you have done that for 2", then knit back and forth across the 20 stitches in the Garter stitch. This swatch basically imitates the bottom edge of a sweater.

Okay I feel like an idiot!!! As I read your reply I figured out that the 2" is "long" not "wide!" duh!! I must have been brain dead when I was reading the instructions. Please forgive me!

Thanks again for your reply.

Don't worry about it. You didn't know, and you asked. That's what this board is here for.
Wouldn't you rather ask a "silly" question instead of assuming something and be wrong? So feel free to ask questions. What might seem obvious to others isn't always obvious to you and vise/versa.
And some day, you'll be reading someone elses question, you'll 'know' the answer, and you can then pass on what you know to them. So I guess you could say this is a form of "Pay it Forward"

No problem. As you learn just pass it on! Some day you might be answering one of my questions.
