I'm knitting on a project using three yarns together. I've read the trick about threading each yarn through a staw and it's supposed to work like a charm so the yarns don't get tangled up while knitting. I tried the staws for a while now on this project and the yarns still get twisted around each other. I also have each skein in separate containers. Am I doing something wrong with the straws, or does any one know of a different trick to keep the yarns from twisting/tangling?
When knitting with multiple strands of yarn, they will start twisting and "tangling" around each other. You could put each in it's own bowl or zip lock bag to keep the balls of yarn themselves separate but as you work with them they strands will twist.
If you are working in the flat - that is back and forth -- you can alternate the direction in which you turn your work as you change needles.

KT has it right--but to make it even easier, put one ball on each side of you and one between your legs. Now when you turn, pick the work up and as you turn, you can easily see that one way will twist them and one way will untwist them--and then, every once in a while you will have to flip one over or under a needle to keep them straight.
I used laura b's method a few years ago when working on an afghan. I lined up eight skeins under the coffee table and one next to me. "Knit in strips and sew it together" my eye! I had to re-organize them every 4 or 6 rows, but it worked well. The biggest problem was my orange tabby loved to lie between the skeins; I believe she had been a knitter in a prior life.

I just put all colors in a box,or all on seperate posts on my yarn holder DH made me. Knit for awhile and then spend a minute de-tangling before setting off again. The most I have worked with has been 8 colors. Hate to wind bobbins as they are always too full or not long enough, so just use the skeins, hanks or balls all at once. Our son once described me as a chaos theory knitter.
I dream of climbing mountains, hunting and going fishing with the kids. Then I wake up.
