I have done a major alteration of my hair and now need to revise my hat. I made one of the felted cowboy hats with scrap yarn that miraculously matched just about everything I wear (except when it doesn't) and now I need to cover ears and neck that haven't seen the light of day for thirty years. How would I go about adding an ear and neck flap? April is still not spring for the most part and my ears are tender. Should I knit it and then try sewing it on? or force holes around the bottom of the crown and pick up stitches? worsted, or DK? rib, or moss stitch?

Dances,
Do you really want to make permanent alterations to your hat? I would be inclined to make a mini scarf or a headband that would cover my ears and the back of my neck. Like a handkerchief or somehthing.

I'm thinking that you wear this hat at times other then spring and in the summer ear flaps and a neck cover might be too warm. Just a thought.

Here is a completely different idea.

You could knit something or knit and then felt the piece. But since your hat is felted you can then hand felt it to you hat with a felting needle. No sewing.

When I made a hat for my mom I knitted an ear and neck band out of non felting yarn at the same time as the hat. It turned out to be her finest winter hat and I have always envied her the nice ear protection. I don't wear this hat in the summer, it is just too hot. Perhaps I should knit another with the earpiece knitted in. Which is kind of a new thought. Ok, weird epiphiney. So I CAN have more than one hat at a time, Yes? Ok, got it. Thanks.

This what I like about knitting groups. You ask for an idea, several people answer, it sets off thought waves in your own mind, you come up with 10 more than you asked for and knitting needles start flying. Great group!!

I dream of climbing mountains, hunting and going fishing with the kids. Then I wake up.
