Does anyone get this magazine? On page 88 of the March 2009 issue there's a cardigan pattern I am thinking of making. The directions for the Body say cast on sts., tells you where to place markers for the border, etc. In ( ) it says work row one of lace pattern 15(17,19,21,23) times. Row one of the lace pattern is knit, as are rows 2, 3 and 4. If you look at the picture on page 34 it sure looks like 4 rows of garter stitch to me. Am I missing something?

Knitting four rows on straight needles would be garter st, wouldn't it?

Yes, Joyce knitting all rows is garter stitch.

What I don't get is why it says to repeat row one of the pattern all those times when the picture sure looks like 4 rows of garter stitch before the lacey part starts. I did the 4 rows of garter st and then the first row with any actual pattern in it(row 5) and it came out wrong-twice so I'm frustrated with the whole thing. I'm knitting the vest for level 11 which is probably more important considering how long I've had level 11. I'm not doing the knitting exchanges-for some reason I'm not getting notifications of e-mails from there like I used to and I forget all about it without them.

Sheepish,
Did you ever figure this out? I have the issue in front of me. What I think they may mean is: k4, place marker for border, [work 12 st pattern rep of Row 1 of lace pat]14(16,18,20,22) times, ending last rep with 11 sts, place marker for border, k4.

When I look at the chart I see that the repeat for the lace pat is 12 sts, and the remaining sts on the chart are 11.

so.....if you are making the smallest size you cast on 187. Row 1 would be k4, (k12)14 times, k11 (the remaining from the chart), k4. This adds up to 187 sts.

Then the directions say to work Rows 2-12 of the lace pat, keeping the first & last 4 sts in garter st.

Those first four rows are garter st like we think. I'm surprised it didn't work for you just doing 4 rows of garter st, and then beg with row 5 of the pattern. Unless....did you remember to keep the first and last 4 sts in garter? You only work the pattern between the markers.
