I knit lots of hats and I usually use a star top for closing. Find a good factor of the number of stitches, usually something like 5 or so maybe as much as 10 if you have 100 stitches, knit 8, k2tog around. Knit the next row plain then another decrease row this time k7, k2tog. Continue in the same sequence until there are 10 stitches left. Cut the yarn, leaving a generous tail. Thread the tail on a yarn needle and run it through the remaining stitches 2 times. Pull it tight and lead it through the top to the inside. Weave it in securely. You can leave the tail on the outside to fasten a pom pom or something before finishing it off on the inside.

That's a bit confusing. You knit two fewer stitches than your factor the first decrease row. If it is 5, for instance, you would knit 3 then k2tog. Then each decrease row you knit 1 fewer stitch before your k2tog. Is that better. I always think giving directions is really hard.
