Need help/info again. I would eventually like to make a cable on a very plain child's sweater. I sort of get the idea of how to do it, but don't know how many rows to judge the turning. Is there anyone who could help in how to do this......as I would love to practice it before I put it into use.

First on cables--you should do a bit of an internet search and find a pattern you like. Then you could practice it. You can certainly mess around and create something. You should have no problem finding a nice cable on line. I would think if youare working on a baby sweater you may not want your design to large. You could cable every 3rd or 4th row----it really depends on what look you are after----good luck I love those cables!

On children's sweaters, the "4x4x4" cable has worked well for me. 4 stitches, cabled every 4 rows, on a background of 4 garter stitches (2 on each side, they make the cable really "pop out"). If you are putting the cables on the front of the sweater, you may want to do the left twist on one side, right twist on the other - not really necessary, but a nice touch.

Do as swatch and experiment until you get a look you like!

Thanks...I did search the internet before I asked as there were lots. It made me more confused that way. My Mom, used to make the cables on plain sweaters....but can no longer get her advice. This is why I am having so much trouble in all that I do. I am following in her footsteps in a way. I take simple, plain sweaters and change the stitches(patterns)on them. This way it always looks like a totally different type of sweater. I have to finish this sweater (my 3rd. in a short time) and I certainly will practice in between doing it. Does anyone also have a run-a-way mind? Being that I seriously started knitting after all these years.......my mind is on the next project. One thing I am doing is one project at a time. Otherwise, nothing gets done and its for the gran kids and they thank God grow so quickly.

lordy yes, and sometimes three and four projects ahead. everyone has their own manner of projecting, some have a continuing round of beginning/ending projects with as many as ten at a time going. My personal level is two at a time, and if I up it to three I feel a bit crazy. A lot of us are self taught, or leaned when young and rediscovered it later. have fun.

I currently have about 10 projects going, but many of them are things like socks, where I have one completely done, or an afghan of 20 squares, where I have 18 done. These sorts of projects (for me) have to be done in a rotation because I can't stand the repetition of doing the exact same thing two times in a row. I recently made a list and chart of all the things I have in progress and planned and came up with 24 things total. Later that week I started working on a project I'd forgotten to list and started something new that wasn't on the list. Apparently I'm insane.

LOL.....Now I don't feel too bad about the needlepoint that is still in the drawer..finally got the threads for it about a year ago. It's only about 15 years old. It is large..oh well..maybe someday. Having lots of enjoyment doing the knitting for my almost 7 year old granddaughter, who loves what I make her. Also made one for my 6 month old grandson. Somehow, I never made one for me in the last 35 years. No desire. I have made the cable and it came out nice. Only thing is that I had all thumbs doing it. Bought the not straight cable needle today. Will try that one. The advice was right on the mark and helped me alot. Thanks
