Ok, here's what you need to do; instead of turning your work to knit back, you need to instead take your needle(right usually)and insert it into the short edge and draw up a loop of yarn and you do this 14 times, this is called "pick up and knit" so you don't really knit the stitches, you just create them and put them on the right needle, now you do the same along the other long edge and do this 44 times, then 14 times on the second short edge. You are now back to the other end of the row that you started with. When you are making your new stitches place your needle 1 stitch into the edge. If you only place it through 1 strand of yarn, it will pull the stitches out of shape and it won't be strong enough. Also remember to do this in such a way that the ridge that forms is on the "inside" of the bag, so you need to find a way to hold the rectangle that works for you. It will seem akward at first, but hang in there and keep at it. If you're not happy with the results, just frog it and try again.
Hope this helps you.

Yep, you're switching from knitting back and forth to knitting counterclockwise *around* the 4 edges of the rectangle you've made thus far. Each turn is 90 degrees and you'll keep the right side facing you the whole time. It's rotating versus flipping.

That's a good discription of what happens. It helps if you are using a circular needle. It might be really tight and awkward on a straight needle

Oh, definitely! A circular needle that's slightly less long than the total circumference of your rectangle (add up the lengths of the sides in inches). Or else, several double-pointed needles. Because the stitches will be going on one end, but off of the *other* end, instead of going back out the way they came.
