I was knitting plain stockinette socks with Trekking XXL in purple. Though the yarn looks variegated on the ball, the sock came out like it was almost one colour. A shame, because i liked the hues on the ball. I ripped the sock in progress and started looking for a different pattern. Interesting enough while knitting, but not too difficult so i can knit in front of the television. And it has to show more of the varigation in the yarn. I thought i found a nice pattern in the book "Socks soar on two circular needles". It is the Bavarian Twisted stitch on page 31.
When i tried to knit the pattern, twisting the stitches gave me a real headache. No fun Frowner
A shame because i like the pattern and it was in the right gauche.
Question : Can i use the same pattern but not twist the stitches ? Or will this make the stitches to sloppy. Or will not twisting the sitches influence the gauge and therefore make my sock too wide.
I now i can make a swatch, but i already tried several patterns and am getting fed-up swatching for this sock/yarn.

And yes John, i know i can make my own pattern Smiler . I do that a lot of the times, but this was meant to be an easy and quick take-along project.

Has anyone experience with this pattern ?

Yes, you can use the pattern without twisting the stitches. The twist makes the stitches stand out more (literally and figuratively), so the overall look will be less striking, more subdued--but not sloppy.

Oh--and I'm just talking generally; I have not seen the pattern you're referring to.

I agree with you sock knitting is a relaxing fair and I do use a pattern for socks as well. Sweaters I usually design or mess with the pattern to make it the way I want it.

I am not familiar with the pattern or twisted sts. to give advice.

Do find something relaxing . . .

Thank you Nancy.
At the moment i switched to knitting "the great american afghan". 25 Different blocks that make up an afghan. I'm doing the blocks in grey, white and black. All leftovers, so it's a great stashbuster. Very relaxing.

Recently i started an inventory of my UFO's. Total of 14 so far but still counting. That is how the purple sock resurfaced.

Ok, Dutch Marje, I'll keep quiet on this one.

Best wishes, John

I knit, therefore I am.
