I am knitting a ca'hat for my husband using circular needles. He has really long hair that he wears in a ponytail. I used a k2p2 ribbing and stst for the body. I want to make an opening above the ribbing for him to pull his hair thru but do not know how. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!
You could make a wider that usual buttonhole in your choice of techniques. If you want a opening that's rectangular and not just a slit, you can knit up both sides of the opening to the desired length as you would on a neck opening, for example, then rejoin.
Good luck, Jude

Hi and Happy New Year. I finally just bound off {I think spelling is right} 10 sts, knit around and at next row I cast on 10 sts when I reached the point of the sts. It worked out. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As another person with long hair, I will be interested to hear how the hat works out, whether it stretches out, etc. Not having made a holey-hat myself, I have wondered whether a horizontal (like you made) or vertical opening would fit better and keep my head warmer.
Vertical works better than horizontal. Also, take into consideration where your tail sits on your head in relation to your hat. A vertical slit leaves you more leeway to angle the hat properly on your head. I also got tired of the lump on the back ( so unbecoming to the hat and head both) and have been putting tail ports in headgear for a while. surrounding the edges with seed stitch or ribbing keeps them from rolling and gaping open and streaching.
