Jude--
I think Rose and Dances are talking about the generic term for what Vivian Hoxbro calls "Shadow Knitting" in her book of the same title.

It uses alternating rows of light and dark yarn to form an image that appears and disappears as the wearer moves: look at it from an angle and there it is; look at it head-on and it's gone. Sort of like a hologram.

R & D -- do I have that right?

There was a Knitty Gritty episode on this. Here's a link to see what it's like. THe woman demonstrating it also showed how to graph your own project.

yup! it's also called shadow knitting.. I have bailed on my original idea and will use letters instead but I would very much like to learn how to draft these designs. there is an odd perpective that occurs so one must take that ito account when graphing. thanks.

There is a chapter in The Knitting Way by Linda Skolnik (founder of Patternworks) and Janice MacDaniels. They also have the "shadow" alphabet graphed in the index.

Hi, I know its been a year since you posted this, but I wonder if you are still willing to help make a graph. I would like to knit my son a sweater in his high school colors with an illusion logo knitted in. I don't know how to graph it. If you could help me, that would be great. Thanks!

My E mail is changed, and yes I would still be glad to help

Do you have a copy of a graphing program? I have stitch and motif maker . The easiest way to work would be to import the logo and impose the graph on top. then it would be a matter of setting up the knits and the purls
Illusion knitting is made by the changing knits and purls on a striped background. it can be set up with the illusion going vertically or horizontally, If you want the stripes to be vertical you will need to knit from sleave to sleave. horizontal is easier to set up. Email me and I will see what I can do.

Thank you for the reply. I guess it just dawned on me that the picture is viewed from the bottom, not from the side (unless you knit side to side). I don't think I'll try that after all. I did think it would be cool, though, for my son to have the "hidden" logo in his sweater!

Probably I'll either do intarsia or duplicate stitch instead. But I appreciate your offer of assistance. Smiler
