I want to knit a blanket with K1row/P1row and my grandma told me to knit the first and last 5+ stitches of each row to prevent curling edges. To me this kind of looks ribbed so I would also like to rib the bottom and top few rows to make a nice edge, my problem is the corners. I want to do my corners so the ribbing meets at an angle like a picture frame, but I can't figure out how to do this so it looks right. I have a picture in my head, but don't know how to transfer it to my project. PLease help!

Mindy, to do it like that you'll need to knit the body of the blanket in stocking stitch, then pick up stitches all around with a long circular needle and do mitred corners.

Mindy, do a google search for "knitted mitered corners" and you will get all sorts of instructions.

Mindy,

I understand what you mean when you say that the garter stitch (knit every row) kind of looks like a 1x1 rib stitch pattern. However, if you were to put the two stitch patterns next to each other you would find a distinct difference. For that reason, I would suggest that instead of trying to make mitred corners with a rib and garter stitch, it would be better to do as Elan suggests and pick-up stitches for the edges after you finish the body of your blanket.

Mindy:
If the mitred corners scares you, try this:
Cast on the number of stitches you want, then knit the first 7 rows.
Row 8: Knit the first 5 sts, purl to the last 5 sts, K5.
Row 9: Knit across

Repeat rows 8 and 9 to get a garter stitch border around your stockinette stitch.

Knit the last 5 rows. Bind off.

There is a baby blanket that's mitred in the Vogue Knitting On the Go baby Blankets book. I made one for a niece last year, adapting it for a larger afghan. If you still need a pattern, send me a PM.

When I make this sort of blanket I do 5 stitches of seed stitch and then k1p1 rib for the main body with 5 seed stitches at the end. after about an inch or so of ribbing I use garter stitch for the 5 stitches at the ends and stockinette for the middle, and then seed stitch again for the ribbing edges at the other ends.
It gives a nice pebbly overlap that looks like a mix of the garter stitch with the rib.
It also occurs to me that you could do a neat mitered look by adding in one stitch of garter with each row subtracting them from the ribs until you get five or six stitches for each side.
does this make any sense?
