We have made a MINOR revision to Level I. For Swatches 1, 2, 3 and 14 you are to use the exact same yarn AND the SAME needle size. The instructions did not specify that the same needle size was to be used for these swatches. That correction has been made.

Is it ok to use a different size needle to cast on/ cast off?

We look at the cast on and bind off edges to see if they are neat and not too tight or too loose. We really wouldn't know if you used a different needle size or not. We do want the ribbing knit with the same size needles.

You know, it would be helpful to note in the instructions that the entire swatch should be worked with the same size needles. I had a few moments of panic after starting the hat project thinking that "Maybe my ribbing would look better if I had gone down a needle size. Almost every pattern has me do it, should I have done that??" I did leave them as-is, but definitely had considered reknitting with different sizes.

The hat project does specify two different needles sizes: US 5 and US 7. I had to go up a size on each to get the correct gauge.
