I was planning on binding off with purl and knit pattern with knitting needles, but then read Vogue pg 51 - Knit one, purl one bind-off which uses a yarn needle to create the bind off. Any suggestions?

There are lots of different bind-offs. The Vogue reference you give sounds like it's talking about a sewn bind-off, which is perfectly fine but by no means obligatory.

You can just bind off in pattern with your knitting needles as you planned to--there's nothing wrong with doing that.

Do your directions tell you to "bind off in pattern"? They may.
If they do, then you should definitely do that, as you originally intended.

Grafting-type bind-offs are wonderful, but not usually a required skill at Level I. I think I'll be doing them in Level III.

Many thanks for the advice. I'll use the good old knitting needles.
