I ordered my level Ia long time ago and started, and then stopped. Knowing myself i wanted to make the questions while knitting the swatches. (I always liked "doing" things more then writing about it). The stopping had to do with my lack of english. I do my best but it is my second language and some things you can not learn from a dictionary. In some questions they ask me to write a section, a paragraph or a whole report on a subject. But how much is that? Is a section something like a page, a paragraph a few sentences and a report a few pages? Please can anybody inform this stupid dutch women so i can try and kick-start this whole "master level I' project.

A paragraph is a few sentences, yes. About a quarter or even a half of a page is plenty. Grammatically, it gives a single topic or idea in one sentence and then follows up with other sentences that fill out or support that topic or idea.
A section is usually one part of a multi-part report. Make it more than a single paragraph--you should find more than one idea for a section. How much more will depend on how much you have to say. A report is not a specific length. I believe the level 1 topic is blocking? (If it isn't you can still get an idea from what I'm saying.) Things to write about include the purpose of blocking, when you might want to and when you might not want to, different methods of blocking, how different types of yarn can be blocked--and probably many other things as well. Each of these things would be at least a paragraph, and some of them would be whole sections. So you can see that you would at least have a page and probably 2 to 4 pages just with these few ideas. I know about four words of Dutch, and I can't pronounce them, so your competence in English proves you're a lot smarter than I am.:-) |

Thank you for your answer. It has given me the confidence to try and start again tomorrow (it is 20:00 now overhere
I'm not that smart. (I failed Mensa by 1 point Due to the fact that The Netherlands are such a small country we get lessons in English,French and German at school. Also, my english improved when i married my American born, Dutch raised (alas now late) husband. But sometimes the simple things can get me confused. Well, it is off to bed for me. For everyone in the USA, have a nice day! |

You're welcome. I hope you continue to feel confident in the morning! As you've done all the knitting work, it would be a pity for the written work to prevent you from submitting Level 1!

Dear Marja:
Bill |

Marja,
There are lots of people who go through this program that are not native English speakers. As long as you let them know, I'm sure they will take that into consideration. They want to know that you understand what you did and why, they aren't grading you on your English skills. Believe this, if they were, a lot of people who grew up speaking English would fail! DainaD and Bill, Thank you for your input. Last year i was in california and was told my english is pretty good. After 2 weeks i even started dreaming in english, or so i was told by my children( i talk in my sleep.) It is just with some concepts i have trouble with. I know what a paragraph etc. are, it's just that i couldn't find anywhere what the common lenght for them is. Peggy R was a great help with that.
Bill, i didn't know there was a translation service on Google. Seeing the result i would advice you not to use it for official information. The level the english was translated to, was about grade 3 in school. So it certainly isn't perfect. I agree with DianaD that the program is to help you perfecting your knitting skills, not your english, so i'm not afraid about that. |
