In Swatch 16, when I started with the CC mid-row, I carried the MC to the edge of the piece to use for the last two rows of MC (this is what I prefer to do for such a small distance when I know the yarn will line up or when I need it again). Is it preferred that I cut the MC yarn and weave in that tail and begin a new tail for the last two rows of MC?
If you can carry the MC without its showing through or affecting the swatch's elasticity (or distorting any stitches), I think it's OK--the instructions don't actually say to cut the MC. However, the objectives do say the swatch is to test your ability to "unobtrusively weave in yarn tails," so you can't go by me. You'll want to get an official OK from Arenda.
I do believe the join and weaving mid-row is an important part of this swatch. Even if you don't usually do this, it's good to be *able* to do it neatly. You want the legs of the last/first stitches to head in the correct directions, as if the yarn were continuous, to show no hole, and the tails not to show through to the front or pucker/pull when stretched.
I asked almost the same question about this swatch, only I wanted to carry the MC when I did the color change in the ribbing. Arenda told me then not to, so I would assume that the same would hold true for the stockinette part as well. I'm not sure where in the Master's area I posted, whether I started a new post or added to one already started, but if you do a search for "swatch 16" or color change, or something like that, you might find my old post and Arenda's reply.

I tried carrying the yarn, since I hate breaking yarn unnecessarily. I couldn't get the join to be invisible, even with blocking. So I tried the break & rejoin thing on the end of another test bit I was swatching, and it really worked out to look nicer.
