I have reviewed 3 Level 3 submissions this week and have noticed a problem. Due to copyright laws we cannot accept photocopied charts. Although this is stated clearly in Level 2, I have discoved it is only mentioned in the instructions for Swatch 14. I apologize but the law is the law. You can use a computer program to create the charts or you can hand draw them.

Just thought I would ask this . . .

Would one be able to include a chart like you stated if credit is given or does it have to be one's own work?

I am not doing level-3 or even started my level-1 but wanted to ask.

Copyright laws are so silly. There is no problem using a chart from a stitch dictionary (that is what they are for) but if you use that pattern (or chart) for the Masters program or you incorporate that pattern into a design you sell, you must reproduce that pattern (or chart) manually. If you xerox it, you are violating the copyright of that specific book). Stitch patterns are not copyrighted. Who can say originally designed a specific cable? But specific reproductions of that pattern in a book or magazine are protected. For the Masters program you do not need to create an original cable or lace pattern. Even if you think you have created it, you can probably find something similar in a published work. We just ask you don't xerox the pattern or chart.

Like so many laws of this type, I'm sure money was involved. If I can get a copy from you, why would I buy the book from them? But it kind of defeats the purpose if you can hand-copy it. Probably because most people are too lazy to put out that much effort for a chart.

They don't know us very well, do they? Big Grin
