I am in the UK, and have just received the instructions for level 1 machine knitting. I have a problem with the yarn requirements for swatches 1 and 2, which specify a yarn normally knit at tension 5. In the UK,we have slightly different yarn thicknesses than those in the US, and the yarn that is used for 99% of knitting on a standard gauge machine is 4ply, which is normally knitted at between tension 6 and 7. Can I do swatches 1 and 2 based on a normal tension of 6 (ie do the swatches at TD 7 and 5), or do I have to stick rigidly to what is in the instructions? In that case, would someone tell me what type/brand of yarn would normally be knit at TD5, as I may have to order it from the US (which I am not over-keen to do, as it makes it quite expensive).
