It's going to depend on what stitch pattern you are using and how you knit. Go to www.yarnstandards.com They have info on the yarn weight system which gives you a general idea of how many stitches per inch you should expect from a certain weight yarn on the standard needle sizes used for that yarn. Should help. You'll see the link listed in the bar running down the left hand side of the page.
Does the yarn band not give the info? If you've lost the yarn band but you know the yarn name try looking it up at www.yarndex.com They have general info about many yarns.
